Read the【Case Reflection】in this section and answer the following questions:
At an international conference of about 300 people, a professor presented an English lesson. First, he invited four students to come to the stage and gave each of them a picture. He told the four students and the conference audience, who pretended to be the rest of the class, that the four pictures together could make a story. The story was about an accident in which a man on a bike was hit by a bus and was injured. The ambulance arrived and the ambulance men took the injured man to the hospital. The task for the four students was to: (1) describe their pictures individually; (2) answer the audience's questions about their pictures; (3) discuss the pictures among themselves and arrange them in order.
After working on the task for some time, three of the four students understood the story and described their pictures. During the process, the professor kept asking them questions to confirm what they wanted to express. The only boy among the four students had some difficulty describing his picture and did not know the words “ambulance” and “ambulance men”. Instead, he used “car” and “policemen”. So the professor corrected him by repeating “ambulance” and “ambulance men”. The other three girls helped him say “ambulance” and “ambulance men” and the boy repeated after the professor and the girls:
Boy:A car and policemen came...
Professor: A car?
Other girls: Ambulance.
Boy: Ambulance. An ambulance and policemen...
Professor: Ambulance men. Ambulance men.
Boy: Ambulance men.
At the end of the task, the professor asked the four students to tell the whole story again. There were a few questions from the audience as well. The class ended when the professor made sure that the boy had learned the two words, ambulance and ambulance men, and the four students could tell the story.
Please describe the process of the lesson and explain the teaching steps used by the professor. What method did he use? What activities did he use? How did he correct the boy when he made mistakes?
Teaching is an activity in which the teacher guides student learning. The process of teaching English reflects a teacher's concept of what teaching is.
In this section we will discuss the process of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in Chinese elementary and middle school classrooms.
