Read the【Case Reflection】in this section and answer the following questions:
The bell is ringing. Mr Y comes into the classroom to begin his lesson. Today the lesson is a reading class about travel. He wants to use a “brainstorming” activity as a lead-in for this class. He wants to ask his students to do it in groups. He begins his class before the students have completely settled down. He says, “Today we are going to talk about travel. Now please discuss this in groups.” His students begin to discuss it, but after a short while he discovers that some students are not discussing the topic because they don't have their own groups, and others are whispering in Chinese, “What did our teacher ask us to discuss? ” On the other hand, discussion in some groups seems to go well.
Do you think there is anything wrong with Mr Y's teaching? Did he organize the group work well? What is wrong with the activity that they are doing? What may be the reasons for the problems?
Proper teaching strategies are very important in English teaching in elementary and middle schools
We can employ different strategies based on what we are teaching, thus improving student learning.
