What is the structure of the passage?
Answer: the whole passage can be divided into two parts.
Part I (paras. 1-9): a fable for tomorrow
(paras.1-2): an imagined ideal habitat for people and animals
(paras.3-7): an invention of man that brought disaster to the place
(paras.8-9): a fable that is becoming realities
Part II (paras.10-25): the obligation to rebuild man-nature balance
(paras.10-11): the history of life
(paras.12-17): impossibility for life to adjust to changed environment
(paras.18-23): the insect problem
(paras.24-25): the obligation
By the end of the class, students will be able to
Develop an environmental consciousness (live and let live).
Practice reading skills.
understanding extended essays (a combination of description, exposition and argumentation)
understanding complicated paragraphs
reading for gist
inferring the author’s attitudes/feelings/opinions/conclusions (her love for the beauty and integrity of nature; her view of man’s relation to nature)
drawing inferences
Appreciate descriptive writing (use of sensory words to paint pictures).
Appreciate devices to make writing precise and powerful.
Learn how to use “so” and “such.”
