Since Chinese-made films were indeed in very poor quality, it was natural for the Chinese audience to turn to Hollywood films to satisfy their aesthetic and entertaining needs. Furthermore, the importation of Hollywood movies met the requirement of China’s market economy. As most theaters and distribution companies were at the edge of bankruptcy due to unwelcome national films, the big gain in box office sales earned from Hollywood movies would help them be financially self-sufficient, and accordingly would make quite a contribution the national revenue.

Moreover, the majority of ordinary Chinese movie-goers welcomed competition from Hollywood, and believed in the “the survival of the fittest.” There are three arguments. First, China’s film industry could benefit much from Hollywood by learning its advanced skills and technology. Second, China’s film business can learn from Hollywood’s marketing and business strategy. Third, the Chinese audience can enjoy watching wonderful movies and thus broaden their horizons about the outside world. Hollywood movies are either helpful for China’s market economy, or useful for China’s cultural reference. Therefore, China could benefit more from Hollywood imports.

Against more Hollywood imports

The inflow of Hollywood films was a disaster to China’s national film industry that would plunge the indigenous industry into a very disadvantaged position.

Western movies and television shows, represented by United States, are fraught with pornography, violence and crimes in the name of reflection social problems and exploring the distorted human life. After giving sensational stimulation, what these films leave for us are only restlessness, fear and lost hearts.

The penetration of American cultural values should be concerned. Most classical Hollywood movies usually have two deep-level structures to propagate American values. The first structure is the manifestation of the American spirit; the second structure is the introduction of “Hero Myth”. the second structure is in the service of the first structure to describe the United States as a paradise on the earth, where freedom, equality, fraternity are achieved, and justice is served by heroes. These are ideological illusions that fool the Chinese people, endanger Chinese cultural tradition, and destroy the spiritual home of the Chinese people.
