The shortest way is to begin with the meaning or message of the story in a sentence or two. Then retell the story as an example of the point.
Sample: Story A
In some cultures, people wait their turn for greetings and attention, but in others, they ask for these things in some clear way. The Irish woman in the pharmacy follows the custom in her country to stand in line to wait for the doctor’s treatment but never gets her turn, as in Latin America they ask for attention directly instead of waiting one’s turn.
Now begin to write the summaries for the other paragraphs.
Story B
In some cultures, polite hosts wait for their guests to ask for dinner; then they serve them food every time their plates are empty. The American guest politely waits for the host’s invitation to the dinner but in vain. So he asks impatiently in end. While eating, he eats quickly and empties the plate as he does in America, but every time he just gets more food put in his plate. The minute when he cannot take more, he realizes the cultural difference but too late.
Story C
The same gestures can have very different meanings in various cultures—even opposite meanings. A group of international students use their European gesture to thumb a ride on their travel and that works out perfectly well. However, the same gesture causes a lot of trouble for them in Greece and Turkey, for they don’t know the gesture means something insulting in the countries.
