1.Does Willy’s dream equal to the American Dream?

No. As we mentioned, the American Dream claims that everyone is equal in the society. As long as one works hard, he will succeed. The intention of American Dream is good. It encourages people to pursue a happier life. However, Willy has twisted the dream. His dream is all about money and high status in society. In order to realize that, he does not try his best and works down to earth. He infuses his unrealistic delusions to his sons and finally leads to the failure of both. Thus we can see Willy’s dream is unrealistic and selfish. He has a wrong understanding of human value and devotes all his life to the illusory dream of success.

2.Why does Ben, Willy’s dead brother appear as a ghost?

(1) Willy lost his father when he was little. His brother remains the only family in the world. Ben has a very successful business, so Willy looks up to him as an idol. Willy works all his life to sell, wanting to gain the approval of his brother, who is actually the substitute of his father.

(2) Ben represents the American Dream in Willy’s mind. Willy’s carving of success and money is the reason for Ben’s showing up. He regrets that he didn’t listen to Ben and go to Alaska for development.

(3) Ben’s multiple appearance is a reminder of Willy’s failure. As the embodiment of American Dream, Ben is like a ghost that hunt him down. In fact, Ben and Willy are in different environment. Ben becomes rich in a jungle, all he needs is to fight. But Willy lives in a society where only the fittest can survive. Willy just can realize this.

(4) Ben is the direct reason for Willy’s death. After being fired by the boss and fight with his son, Willy still can’t see the reality clearly. He keeps thinking about his brother’s success and his failure. In order to maintain the dignity, Willy commits suicide.

3.What actually cause Willy’s death?

The cruelty and oppress of the society are not the culprits. The flaw lies in Willy’s character results in the tragedy. He always thinks that respect is earned through superficial things. He thinks popular people will success, but overlook hard work. He avoids dealing with reality and never calmly accepts that he is ordinary and his family should live a ordinary and happy life. His confusion of delusion and reality as well as his contradiction cause his tragic ending.
