Fitzgerald sensed a core of rottenness beneath the surface of the splendor in the 1920s. he believed that the wealthy class corrupted the whole of American society because it became everyone’s ideal to join it. The wealthy become the symbol of hope and optimism and success. Thus the “American Dream” that anyone can succeed with hard work and determination is intensely challenged in Fitzgerald’s works. Before you read the text, think about the following questions.
● Analyze Fitzgerald’s conception of the American Dream. Does he view it as totally dead, or is it possible to revive it?
● Is Nick a reliable narrator? How does his point of view color the reality of the novel?
● What is the distinction between East and West Egg?
