In a Station of the Metro was published in 1913, one year after Pound’s experience in an underground metro station in Paris in 1912. After a rainfall, Pound sensed the heavy and damp air and the sweat and mildew smell in the dark station, as well as the indifference between individuals. All these left him depressed and suffocated. In his eyes, the deathly darkness pervaded the city, the tunnel, the tube, the platform and the people’s spirits.
