PART 4 总结反思

Whitman writes this poem from the perspective of a sailor, who spends a lot of time with the captain. In the first stanza, the poet uses the first person, to express his willing to share the joy of victory. In the second stanza, the poet uses the second person. It suggests that the poet cannot accept the fact that the captain is dead; it seems that the death is only a nightmare. The second person express the sorrow precisely. In the third stanza, the poet uses the third person to suggest that captain has already dead and fact is fact, we have to deal with it.

The poet is skillful in using different person, metaphor and repetition to convey his sorrow and bitterness.
