😊 Here below listed are the important aspects about Unit Three.

I.Theme

Globalization is a historical process, starting before “the first camel caravan ventured afield.” It is now already a reality, not a choice. In other words, it is something you have to live with, whether you like it or not.

The basic dynamic remains the same: goods move, people move, ideas move and cultures change. With the moving of goods and people, comes the change of idea and the change of culture. The change of culture is accompanied by conflict. However, since cultures are resourceful, the prospect of globalization will not be “Americanization”. Rather, globalization will result in a cultural merging.

II. Writing Style

The author employs the rhetorical devices of metaphor and contrast. She uses the inductive approach in this journalistic writing. She argues from facts along with personal opinions and appeals to common knowledge. The essay is informal and subjective in tone. For specific examples, one can refer to the section NOTES ON THE TEXT for more details.

In presenting her arguments, the author does not adopt a polemic tone, nor does she approach the issue from an international political or economic perspective. Her approach is a historical one, using incidents in everyday life, following a method of contrast, which makes for easy reading. Her choice of the example of the playing of mah-jongg on the Internet by Tom Sloper is a case in point.

III. Implications

Globalization has become one of those words with the highest frequency of appearance but at the same time it is also a most controversial issue in terms of content, implication and consequence. Since the early 1990s, globalization has developed rapidly and brought great changes to the world. However, groups of people oppose globalization and point to the negative effects of globalization.

After reading the article, one can see that the author is positive on globalization. She holds that goods move, people move, ideas move and cultures change and globalization is something you have to live with, whether you like it or not. Furthermore, the author makes readers think more about views and attitudes to globalization.
